In my mid forties, I entered a period of transition that continued for almost a decade. Circumstances, events, change began to turn my world upside down. Though it felt intensely personal at the time, I realize now it is a universal experience among women. My children began to leave the nest and after a lengthy period of time in which I cared for my elderly parents, I became a motherless child and a childless mother. My life lost its meaning and purpose paving the way for the realization that the work I was doing was not going to fill the void.
Worn to the bone by a lifetime of giving it all away, I discovered, like many women do at some point in their lives, that I was suffering from a serious case of “compassion fatigue”. It became crystal clear to me that I was done with denying my dreams for the good of others. It was time for me to nurture myself and rediscover who I was created to be.
I began to create more and more space in my days for writing, a long neglected passion. In the process I discovered myself and a whole lot more. I discovered that there are a plethora of women over fifty who are or have faced a similar transition and are now finding a new direction and new meaning for their lives. We are realizing collectively that today’s aging woman is living a life quite different from that lived by our mothers and grandmothers. We are discovering that we are more ready than ever before to take on a new challenges. We are more confident than we ever imagined we would be and many of us are throwing caution to the wind and reaching for the stars. We are starting businesses, writing our first books, selling everything we own and traveling the world. Our generation of “seniors” is aging with an abundance mentality and an enthusiasm for doing those things we have up until this point only dreamed about doing. We believe in ourselves. We believe in each other. We believe that we have everything we need within reach. Using the lessons we learned throughout life, we are aligning ourselves with our true values and tossing aside anything of lesser value. Above all, we are eager to engage fully in this chapter of their lives and share our journey with others.
