New book documents shift in the life of work
TORONTO, April 14, 2011. Baby boomers aren’t interested in traditional retirement — they’re resisting the arbitrary “best-before” date that is being imposed on them. The vast majority intend to continue working. And many believe that they are on the verge of the most important phase of their careers.
Author and Huffington Post columnist Julia Moulden has just released her third book — RIPE: Rich, Rewarding Work After 50. Chock full of real life and celebrity examples RIPE both documents this trend and guides readers through the transition with practical know-how. Woven throughout is Julia’s life-affirming message: “Our most fulfilling years are ahead; we just need to grab hold of them.”
Moulden identifies six major reasons people decide to “ripen,” from those who are looking for a new challenge in their fifties, to empty-nesters, to people who’ve retired and are miserable. She has also mapped out a 12-week process people can use to find their way into this new phase of their careers.
• There are those who discover new passion for the same path, which Moulden calls “the Masters.” Like Marilyn Grist, the Executive Director of HelpAge International. Marilyn thought she needed to reinvent herself at midlife, but discovered, “My work is my work, and it’s mine for a lifetime.”
• And those who feel bored and burned out and set out to do something new, “the Pathfinders.” Like Barbara Johnson, who left corporate life to become a social innovator. She helped American Girl founder Pleasant Rowland make the SuperKids reading program a spectacular success.
The pursuit of rich, rewarding work after 50 is a personal journey. However, the quest is also fuelled by outside influences, Moulden points out. “For one, most boomers can’t afford it. And the cost of pensioning off an entire generation is too high.” She adds that the economic benefits of keeping people in the workforce are becoming clear, citing a McKinsey study which estimates that higher rates of labour force participation as a result of longer careers in the U.S. could generate $12.9 trillion in GDP from now until 2035.
