This month’s selection for the Aging Abundantly Book Club is a recent favorite of mine. I Will Not Live An Unlived Life: Reclaiming Passion and Purpose by Dawna Markova is at it’s heart poetic. Packed with images, metaphors and enough symbolic language to keep me giddy for weeks, it is a book to savor. It reminds me of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gift from the Sea, and if you liked it, you will enjoy Markova’s work.
QUOTES BY DAWNA MARKOVA
Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the second chapter where she writes about the beginning of her healing journey.
“I need to recover a rhythm in my heart that moves my body first and my mind second”
“I need to take a sacred pause, as if I were a sun-warmed rock in the center of a rushing river.”
“I need a safe place in which to tell myself the truth.”
and maybe my favorite in this chapter:
“Through fear of knowing who we really are we sidestep our own destiny.”
Her words speak to me. Everywhere I look I see people racing around trying to be someone and do something. In the process they experience “soul leakage” as she Markova calls it. I know I became acutely aware of my “soul leakage” as I entered my mid-life years. The doing and trying finally caught up with me. I hear this from other midlifers often. And, the time arises when the need to stop is necessary in order to make space for something different to blossom.
Change isn’t easy. Living in rhythm with our heart and body is. It’s not perfect. It’s not without it’s challenges, but it feels like living and breathing with the universe not the world.

My favorite line in this post: “I need to take a sacred pause, as if I were a sun-warmed rock in the center of a rushing river.” Very calming . . .!
Yes, I love that one too, Marian.
