I love my long gray hair!
Not because I think I look particularly fabulous, but because:
a) I’ve had so much fun growing it long and watching the array of colors emerge – cost-free! Blond, gray, white, brown, such natural whimsy, an ever shifting display of color. It’s a constant surprise to see what’s next!
b) More importantly, my long multi-color gray hair feels like me. I wore my hair short more often in my life than long but my short hair was me keeping my light under a bushel; staying safe and coloring within the lines. A part of me works endlessly to color inside of the lines — to perfection — but perfect is so hard! I’m over doing hard for no good reason.
I love the freedom that our generation has unearthed to embrace the aging process with enthusiasm and intelligence. We revel in our wisdom and all that we have gained from living. And, we keep pushing the boundaries of our understanding, of our selves and each other. We value the evolutionary process of becoming all we can possibly be from the inside out. This wasn’t possible for our mothers and grandmothers.
EMERGING WOMAN
The last ten years have been a fabulous journey inward and the rewards, while still emerging, are proof positive to me that joy and peace can only come to us from the inside out. As we let our hair down, literally or figuratively, we are expressing our new-found freedom. We are fully into the process of breaking free from cultural restrictions and the suffocating bias toward aging in general, and aging women in particular.
“I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR”
Even though in years gone by we sang boldly to the tune “I am woman, hear me roar”, we were still in our preparation phase. We were learning the words, but for most it would take a lifetime to embody them. In this decade we are at last owning our strength and power to a new level of fullness. We are no longer simply females wearing the mask of our male counterpart.
The voice of the woman is being heard loud and clear now, and she is earning respect. Our generation made this happen and we did so by first taking the risk and mustering the courage to dig deep and get to know ourselves as whole human beings. In the process we learned that we are strong and kind, intelligent and understanding, articulate and spectacular listeners. In our fullest and most honest expression of who we are, we matter. We make a difference.
I may love my hair gray, but I don’t require you to love your hair gray. I simply hope you’ll love yourself in all your regal glory and fullest expression of who you are with the courage to share it, in love, with all the world. You are magnificent. Believe it. The world needs you. DS
