SET UP YOUR HOME

Take the time now to set up your home to work well even if you encounter mobility issues. Installing a stairlift, for example, will help you if you struggle with the stairs. You can also purchase specially designed furniture that used in retirement homes. Companies like Crown Furniture sell furniture designed for those who struggle with mobility. Investing in a a few changes now and pay big dividends down the road.

SOCIALIZE MORE

Our social life can suffer as we get older for a variety of reasons.  Decreased mobility or turning in our driver’s licence can create a situation where it is necessary to rely on others to come to our home rather than going out. This may lead us to stop trying to connect. It’s so important to make the effort to socialize as much as you can now.  Look for local seniors groups that you can attend regularly, and engage in hobbies where you’ll meet like minded people. Staying active and socializing regularly now will help establish relationships for later and make it   easier to retain your independence.

VISIT THE DOCTOR REGULARLY

Health problems are most often the cause of people losing their independence. If you have trouble with your joints, for example, it stops you from doing basic tasks like cooking and cleaning. Some problems are inevitable but many issues can be addressed if caught early enough. That’s why it’s so important to visit the doctor regularly. They will help you do what you can to address any problem before it stops you from living independently.

ASSISTED LIVING

At some point, it may be necessary to have regular help and care. You can remove the burden by choosing  assisted living where you can maintain as much independence as possible while still having support services. Most offer a private residence with help as needed. In addition, people are available in an emergency.

Retaining your independence as you get older can be tough. But following these tips now will help you prepare for the future.
