Putting Your Health First As You Get Older

Health First

While we can’t stop the aging process, when we put our health first and learn to embrace getting older, we will enjoy these years a great deal more. Even if you’ve not seen many signs of aging, now is the time to start taking action. One of the most important things you can do at any age is to eat a nutritious diet and get regular exercise. Eliminate bad habits to the extent you are able, such as smoking and drinking too much alcohol.

ROUTINE CHECK UPS

It’s also important to visit your doctor at least once a year and to get regular tests for your hearing and eyesight. While it is true that all of our senses begin to diminish as we age, there are ways to improve their resiliency and health.  Find ways to make the process enjoyable. For example, if your eyesight goes, invest in a trendy pair of glasses that will boost your self-image and spirits. If you notice a change in your hearing, do have it checked and learn more about the different options for hearing aids.

SKIN & FOOT CARE

Protect your skin from the sun. Smoking also ages skin which is another great reason to kick the habit. Sunscreen and moisturizers used daily will protecting your skin, preventing skin damage and improve its appearance.

Foot care is another thing most of us don’t think too much about. But, proper care of your feet will prevent problems such as corns, bunions or ingrown toenails. Try applying moisturizer to your feet before going to bed and using moisturizing socks to avoid dry skin. Cut your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, and make sure your footwear fits properly and provides sufficient support.

SLEEP IS IMPORTANT

Again, very important at any age but even more important as we get older – make sure you get enough sleep! If you don’t, it can leave you feeling tired and grumpy. Experts always suggest establishing a bedtime routine and going to bed at the same time every night. If you have trouble falling asleep avoid long afternoon naps. A delightful way to wind down and a favorite tradition of mine is warm cup of chamomile tea or warm milk before bed.

STAY CONNECTED

Finally, while taking care of your physical self is vital, it is also essential that you tend to your emotional health as well. Spend time with other people to prevent feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Try to develop new hobbies and interests or think about becoming a volunteer. Keep in touch with people by using Skype to call friends and family who don’t live nearby. If you are single, divorced, or bereaved and would like to meet someone, try looking into dating companies and websites.
