When you find yourself stuck in indecision and not enjoying your life, one small decision can change everything. It did for me, and I believe it can for you.
As a young person, I did not receive good guidance. The hidden message in the advice I received was about fear and what I was “supposed” to do, rather than a discussion about what I wanted my life to look like. In this confused state, I made one less than stellar decision after another. To compound matters, when I crashed and burned as I eventually did, I had little support.
FEAR OF RISKING
As a result, I grew more and more fearful of taking risks. the only way I knew to decrease the pain in my life was to stop risking. My life became smaller and smaller as I did only what I thought I was “supposed” to do. I turned my back on my creative spirit but the most valuable parts of myself. Instead, I relied on the hidden messages of family, friends and society to chart my path.
Fortunately, there came a time when I was in my early fifties that I knew it was time to either live or die. Age was no small factor. Sometimes we need to have our back against the wall to do the hard thing we long to do and awakening to the understanding that life wasn’t forever was just such a moment for me.
ONE SMALL DECISION
Moving forward began with my willingness to find the courage to make one small decision to doing something I wanted to do for myself, not for my children, my husband, our business, my family or any other external reason. I made the decision to take a writing class. At fifty-one, that one decision changed the trajectory of my life. Did my whole life fall into place? It did not. It took another ten years before I could say I am happy and at peace with who I am and my life and I will always be a work in progress. But, it was the beginning of living my life on my terms.
Do yourself a favor. If you’re feeling stuck, unhappy, confused, lost, or overwhelmed, make one decision from the center of you. Just one. I promise, it will take you in the direction you long to go. If you don’t know what that decision is, or need or want support and guidance, reach out to me or someone you know can provide it. You’re worth it. The world needs you. You need you.
