HOW TO BUY A COFFIN – The Grieving Process

Buying a coffin is one of the more challenging tasks we face when we lose a loved one.  Deep in the middle of this life-changing and heart-breaking time, it’s difficult to think clearly about such a thing. Most never put much thought into the details of such a purchase until it’s forced upon them. Still, it’s something that must be done and is very much a part of the grieving process. When you find yourself faced with making such a purchase, give yourself the grace and the space you need to move through it as you are able. A support team is helpful, but choose them wisely. The last thing you need is a tug of war with family members.

CHOOSING THE MATERIAL

All coffins are not manufactured using the same material. There are now many different options to choose from. An increasingly popular option, given the concerns about global warming, is the standard cardboard coffins. The environmental benefits of choosing a cardboard coffin is significant, as it can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 90 per cent. In addition, in doing so, you don’t have to compromise on quality either or design. There are plenty of options.

COFFIN DESIGN

The dark wood or black coffin is a popular choice, traditionally. However, there are no rules. Choose a coffin that speaks to your heart and your loved one’s. If something more colorful or unusual is more representative, don’t hesitate. Your choice in this moment need not be simply something you have to get through, it can be a symbol of your loved one that remains in your heart going forward.

A recent trend that has gained in popularity is to have coffins painted. This provides the perfect opportunity to leave a beautiful message for the person you are saying goodbye to. This has given many parents who have lost a child a valuable opportunity for expressing their intense feelings.  Some opt for a light blue or pink coffin for example and then have it painted with teddy bears or other symbols that represent what the child loved. The parents feel they are providing a comfortable and safe resting place for their little one.  Families of veterans often opt for veteran display flag cases and other ornaments for their lost loved ones.

COST CONSIDERATIONS

In the midst of such a painful time, it is not uncommon to want to throw caution to the wind when it comes to price, but done. It is highly unlikely that your loved one would want you to go into debt because of a coffin purchase. Fortunately, you don’t have to. There are coffins to suit all budgets. Do some online research and decide on a budget prior to making a selection.  Don’t be afraid to shop within a specific price range. It is okay to be realistic.

Hopefully, these simple guidelines will help you navigate the difficult process of laying your loved one to rest.  By starting with a budget, you can then consider the material and design as you make your decision and feel comfortable doing so. Remember it’s just a step in the process of moving through your loss. It need not be a perfect decision. Just do your best to make it a comfortable one.
